Spring is here!
There’s a few ways of being able to tell the seasonal change – over here in Oregon, the biggest tell is that the sun is finally showing! This always feels like an event for us and you can see people finally coming out from their dens and feeling the sunshine. The mood in the air is indescribable.
The sunshine isn’t the only sign either – we all know that Spring indicates flowers blooming! Portland, where I live, is know as the City of Roses so we take blooming flowers pretty seriously over here.
With that said, I decided to combine the two – I am presenting my version of a Sun Flower! JOANN helped encourage me bring something together for Spring time and I thought this was a fun combination. This amigurumi pattern acts as a great pillow and home décor.
It’s the time for new things!
JOANN is always helping me be rejuvenate my love for crafting. I’ll be honest.. I have been having some troubles with working with size 4 worsted weight yarn. It has been hurting my hands a great deal and it takes a bit of time!
I was asked to make an amigurumi with a more “jumbo” look and I am so glad I did! I went shopping around JOANN and found now one of my favorite yarns to work, Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn! You can find more details about the yarn below.
Anyways, I bring this up because its totally inspired me to get back into amigurumi designing again. This was so much easier on my hands, I love how soft it is to feel, the speed in which my project worked up, and being able to use a bigger hook just fits so nicely in my hand!
How do you think I did with this design?
JOANN has all the yarn that you need to gets started – this pattern is fairly easy and very cheap to create! You can make quite a few out of just one skein. In the pattern, you will be able to find everything that you’ll need.
You can find the full free pattern down below!
What are you doing to freshen up?
Crafting is never a linear line and it’s always important to do things that revitalize you. I find that if I keep creating the same thing over and over, it can become stale. I know jumbo amigurumi are quite in and I can see why! This was the spark I needed to feel fulfilled once again.
I look forward to playing around with this kind of medium some more. Working in bigger shapes makes a larger impact when designing and a new challenge within itself. I am always open to taking new ideas! Lately, I have been taking names of objects quite literally. You can see another example with my Baking Butter Flies!
JOANN is always adding to their catalogue that it’s almost I possible to get bored. The hardest part is knowing what to grab and I hope with this project, you’ll know you next project.
Who is this project great for?
This project is great for so many different kinds of crochet crafters, you can check out these bullet points to see if you or a loved one might fit the description!
- If you want a project that works up quickly
- Looking for a project that isn’t difficult and uses very basic stitches
- Want to give sewing some practice
- If you’re looking to add some fun home décor for the new season shifts!
So where can you find what you need?
You can find every single thing I used for this project from JOANN stores and you will see all of that hyperlinked for you. JOANN is my favorite place to go for materials and the yarn I love the most for amigurumi can be exclusively found there as well. When purchasing, I earn a little bit of the commission, so thank you for supporting me as a blogger!
This yarn is a ton of fun to use – have you tried out Bernat Baby Blanket Sparkle Yarn? This is my first time! I don’t typically gravitate towards yarn that has an extra material to it but this one works really well. I like the dimension it gives and you can’t feel it at all which is nice!

Lets Get Started!
Main Body (Make 2)
Begin in yellow
Rnd 1: 6 Single crochet into Magic Ring (6) (Click here for video tutorial!)
Rnd 2: *Inc* around (12)
Rnd 3: *Sc, Inc* around (18)
Rnd 4: *Sc 2, Inc* around (24)
Rnd 5: *Sc 3, Inc* around (30)
Rnd 6: *Sc 4, Inc* around (36)
Rnd 7: *Sc 5, Inc* around (42)
Rnd 8: *Sc 6, Inc* around (48)
Rnd 9: *Sc 7, Inc* around (54)
With first circle / panel, finish off. With second panel, leave working yarn attached.
Attaching both panels:
With the panel that has still has the working yarn attached, pull your orange yarn through to begin the round. In set your hook into the NEXT stitch and push through both panels. On the back panel, insert into the lower stitch (which would be the first stitch when flipped around facing forward)
Single crochet through both of the panels:
Continue single crocheting into each stitch across through both panels
Continue doing this all the way around until you’re about 3/4th’s of the way completed.
Now is the perfect time to insert your 18mm safety eyes that you got from JOANN! Try your best to line the safety eyes as straight as you can. Since it’s worked in the round, you will need to eyeball this!
To find the distance, start counting from where the orange yarn meets the yellow. Count 4 stitches across and the safety eyes will be placed in the 5th stitch: (Dont forget to use your washed to secure into place)
Now that you safety eyes are safely inserted and you’ve secured with the back washer, you can now stuff your work with Polyfill! Stuff until you are satisfied with how plump you want your sun flower to be.
Once you are content, continue single crocheting all the way around until the final stitch. The next step will show how to make this look cleaner and not an obvious color change.
Instead of single crocheting into the next stitch as you typically would, you will single crochet into the bottom portion of the next stitch where it is circled below:
Your round is now DONE! The next round will be adding all of the sun beams! You will continue working with the same working yarn so do not finish off yet.
Creating the Sun Beams (Repeat)
Into your first stitch, you will be working down below the stitch just like we did at the end of the previous round (this creates a cleaner finish) This counts as the first stitch.
Here how much better it looks!
Into the next 8 stitches, single crochet across (A total of 9 stitches)
Now, ch 1 and turn your work. (You will begin working the opposite direction)
Now that your work is turned, Decrease into the first stitches”
Single crochet into the next 5 stitches. With the last 2 stitches remaining, decrease to end the row.
You will continue this same process for the next 2 rounds, follow the pattern until 3 stitches are left (These will be displayed as row 2 and 3, as we just finished row 1 of the triangle.)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Dec into first 2 stitches, Sc into next 3 stitches, Dec into final 2 stitches. (5)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Dec into first 2 stitches, Sc into next 1 stitche, Dec into final 2 stitches. (3)
Here is how that should look:
From here, Ch 2. Do not turn. Skip the first stitch and Double Crochet into the next sticth.
Single crochet into the next stitch.
From here, begin single crocheting down the edge of the triangle, working into each stitch.
Once you reach the end, you will single crochet into the same stitch as the 9th stitch from the first row (circled below)
Here is the first finished sun beam!
Into the next stitch, single crochet. Single crochet into the next 8 stitches (9 in total)
You will now be repeating these same steps all the way around! Scroll back up to refresh yourself on how this was done.
Leaves (Make 6)
Ch 8
Row 1: In second stitch from hook, sc. Sc across (6) **When I crochet, I like it loose so I start with 2 extra stitches. If you aren’t reaching 6 stitches at the end, please try starting with a *Chain 7* instead
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Dec into first 2 stitches, Sc into the next 2 stitches, Dec into the final 2 stitches (4)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Dec across (2)
Attaching the Leaves:
These leaves will be poking out from between the original orange sun beams. You can use any corner of the leaf you prefer – I didn’t use the corner where my round ended, but instead the corner before that.
First, find the placement of the leaves you desire. You can either have it just poking out or have it farther out so the leaves look longer (I decided to make mine just poke out a little bit)
With the leaf in place, you will be using your darning needle to sew onto the project.
When sewing on, you will be weaving your darning needle through the backs of the stitches – you shouldn’t be able to see the green yarn in the front of your work. If it is appearing, retry and make sure its just the back loops.
They should be invisible like this:
Continue sewing through the leaf, pulling back out in a loop and pulling your need back up through the leaf once again.
Here is how the leaf will look when sewn on! Continue this with each leaf all the way around.
Weave in all your ends. Last step is to embroider on the face! You will be using the black and pink yarn for the lashes + blush on the face!
You’re all done!
Congratulations to you and I hope you had just as much fun creating this project as I did designing it. It’s so squishy and I think is a really versatile pattern. Although this was indented for the warmer seasons, I think it’s perfect for the gloomy days, too. Let me know down below in the comments how you enjoyed the pattern!
