This post was sponsored by JOANN – My favorite craft store to visit for all my yarn and tools that I use. Also, you can’t resist all their coupons!
Spring season is on the horizon and as I have done my fair share of winter and holiday patterns; I wanted to get a jump on the change of seasons! There are a ton of different projects I could start that remind me of the season but I wanted to focus more on the outdoors than anything.
I wanted to find something that I could take quite literally – with that said, he is my take on a ButterFly! As you guessed and can see from the photo above, I went with literally a stick of butter and some wings. Taking the name to its origin – I can’t be the only one whos ever had an image of this when thinking of butterflies, right?
Lucky for me, JOANN makes it easy to spread my own wings per say and try to come up with something a little less traditional! They are always encouraging me as a content creator and amigurumi designer to try new things and I think after the initial “what..?” they might enjoy this new pattern as much as I hope all of you do too.
These don’t actually exist?
They don’t need to! With Spring coming it’s way, its a great time for renewal and revival – One thing I would like to focus on is being able to play around with my imagination even if I don’t imitate something that already exists. If you’ve followed me over the years, I think this kind of project is on brand for me which I am proud to say.
I always love the freedom I get from crafting with JOANN – they know that art can be funny and not be taken so seriously! When I was designing this simple project, I had to take a step back from trying to make it too complex. I wanted something I could easily smile at.
How do you think I did with this design?
JOANN has all the yarn that you need to gets started – this pattern is fairly easy and very cheap to create! You can make quite a few out of just one skein. In the pattern, you will be able to find everything that you’ll need.
You can find the full free pattern down below!
What is your first image of a Butterfly?
It feels like we all have some sort of relationship with butterflies one way or another – learning about them, seeing them outside, and viewing them in all various medias! I typically think of the classic orange-winged ones but after this project, I think I will be seeing them in this way. Let me know if I have changed your perception of them too!
Speaking of wing colors, the images you see here are just the ones I felt like using – when grabbing your yarn from JOANN stores, the color choices are unlimited! I just love the being able to choose any and every color – you also don’t have to stick to just one color scheme either, their Big Twist line is so vibrant.
Butter is used for various reasons especially in the kitchen – if you want to take a break from crochet, JOANN also offers plenty of ways to be creative in the kitchen as well!
Who is this project great for?
This pattern works in both the row and is really great for any beginner! The single crochet is all you’ll need and you can get some great practice when it comes to sewing. Great if you want to indulge in a quirky project that will surprise those around you!
So where can you find what you need?
You can find every single thing I used for this project from JOANN stores and you will see all of that hyperlinked for you. JOANN is my favorite place to go for materials and the yarn I love the most for amigurumi can be exclusively found there as well. When purchasing, I earn a little bit of the commission, so thank you for supporting me as a blogger!

Let’s Begin!
Body
Begin in Yellow (For this project, I used Big Twist Pale Yellow)
Chain 7
Row 1: In second chain from the hook, Sc. Sc across (5) (If you are not hitting a 5 stitch count, instead start with a “Chain 6”)
Row 2 – 20: Ch 1, turn. Sc across (5)
We will now be working in the round but single crocheting around the edge. The pattern will be using “Rnds”
Rnd 21: In the same stitch on the side of your work, single crochet.
Begin single crocheting into each stitch across the edge of your work – here is how that will look:
Single crochet until the corner stitch and single crochet. Single crochet into stitch.
After the fist single crochet, single 2 more times into the same stitch (3 in total) Your work will begin to naturally turn.
Continue single crocheting along the short end until the corner stitch.
Into the next corner stitch, sc x 3 into the same stitch.
Sc along the long edge once again – you will not be hitting a “corner” stitch but instead is just the last stitch of the side. Sc x 3 into the last stitch. This will count as the corner stitch.
Sc into the 2nd stitch of the short end – your first stitch will be covered from the 3 single crochet stitch you just did!
Single crochet along the last short edge until the final stitch (the first stitch that began this round)
You will now be left with 55 stitches! If you are off, this most likely happened during the corner stitches.
We will now be working in the Back Loop Only!
Rnd 23: In the Back Loops Only, Sc around your body of work (55)
Here is how working in the back loops will look – you should see this “ribbing”. Continue this all the way around and you will not need to do anything different into the corner stitches.
Rnd 24 – 29: Sc around (55)
Your work will begin to look more like an ovular bowl!
Lid – Begin Big Twist Pale Yellow
(This will be worked the same exact way as we did above until round 21)
Chain 7
Row 1: In second chain from the hook, Sc. Sc across (5)
Row 2 – 20: Ch 1, turn. Sc across (5)
We will now be working in the round but single crocheting around the edge. The pattern will be using “Rnds”
Rnd 21: In the same stitch on the side of your work, single crochet. Single crochet along the first edge. In the first corner, Sc x 3. Your work will begin to turn. Sc across until nect corner, sc x 3.
Finish off and leave generous length tail for sewing

Assembly
It’s time to put all the pieces together!
To begin, we will be attaching the lid to the top of the body. With your darning needle connected to the lid, insert through the “corner” of the body (you can do your best to eyeball where this is)
Insert your needle through the body, from front to back.
With your needle, insert through the next stitch and back through the lid.
Continue going back and front through each stitch across in both the lid and main body around. Stop at when you’ve done the first full side so we can insert the safety eyes!
As we continue along, this is a great time to insert the safety eyes. These will be placed in round 26 with 9 stitches apart.
Continue sewing your work shut and don’t forget to stuff your project firmly with polyfill or any other filling you may have!
Here is how your project will look when you make it to the end!
Before sewing on the rest of the pieces, I like to add my embroidery details early. You can choose to do this later!
Attaching the Wings (Safety pins will be helpful)
With both the large and small wings, pin into place. The large will be on top and the small will be below.
Leaving just the top wing, you will use your darning needle to pull through and secure. Pull from the bottom through both layers and pull tight into place!
Pin on the bottom wing (angled downward) and sew on just like you did with the large wing.
To keep it uniform, I like to pull the yarn through both wings on the side to keep them together:
And here is how that looks! You will do the exact same process on the other side as well
ALL DONE!
Congratulations – I hope you had as much fun making this Baking Butter Fly as much as I did designing it! Big thank you to JOANN for helping inspire this beginner friendly project.
