These are.. Bottles? Potions?
So to be transparent, I began with creating love potions when making this design with JOANN! They have an amazing Yarnormous deal going on at the time of writing and wanted to give a different yarn a try. So I went with cotton!
After my first prototype, I really liked the look but it didn’t scream “Potion” to me, it more-so said “Bottle”! I was going to scrap it but after creating a potion bottle, I still really liked the bottle. So below, you will be able to find the pattern for both items down below for FREE with the help of JOANN!
If You Can’t Feel the Love, I have a Potion!
I know there are a lot of ways to fall in love and sometimes all anyone needs is a potion to make it come true! Love is represented in lots of different ways such as hearts, arrows, etc. and the concept of having a magic elixir for anything has always been fun to me. JOANN stores wanted something to fit the theme of Valentines and I think something quick and easy would be perfect!
When thinking of what next to make when designing a JOANN pattern is how can I keep with within your view after it’s created? This project is perfect to sit at any desk for a loved one, romantic or friendly!
Do you game?
JOANN and I know that crafters are diverse people with all sorts of different hobbies and passions – for gamers, this is the perfect project! If you have ever played any sort of game where you have health, potions come up a lot. I wanted these to be able to fit into a fantasy kind of world and I think they do the trick!
You are free to call these potions or bottles – both found in media in clever ways. Let me know if these remind you of any game out there! They are an original idea but a vibe might still be there.
The yarn.
JOANN is having a YARNORMOUS Sale on all their yarn at the time of writing this blog post (January 24th, 2024) but even if you miss the sale this go around, there are always hosting something awesome for crafters to enjoy. Even during their day to days, you can find coupons for your purchases!
I decided to use Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton yarn! I have been using a lot of tubular and since I wanted this to be an accessible pattern, I went with something much cheaper. I use a lot of acrylic and wanted to feel cotton this time around!
I really do like the yarn but sometimes the colors don’t match up as I wish it would – so some colors you might choose will turn out bigger.
This project can be done with any size 4 worsted weight yarn!
How Easy is this Project?
So easy! And pretty quick. You could make multiples of these before getting bored in my opinion! Being able to work with the felt makes it even quicker than having to crochet a heart onto the project.
A beginner can jump right into this pattern – just make sure you are stuffing your work throughout as it can be tricky towards the end!

Lets Get Started!
Main Body
Begin in main color B (Any color you want your bottle liquid to look like!)
Rnd 1: 6 Single crochet into Magic Ring (6)
Rnd 2: *Inc* around (12)
Rnd 3: *Sc, Inc* around (18)
Rnd 4: *Sc 2, Inc* around (24)
Rnd 5: *Sc 3, Inc* around (30)
Rnd 6: *Sc 4, Inc* around (36)
Rnd 7 – 9: Sc around (36)
Switch to White – when switching color, pull the new color through the last 2 loops of your final single crochet of the round. In this case, pull the white yarn through at the end of round 11 like so:
Rnd 10 – 12: Sc around (36)
Tip: To have a cleaner color change, insert your hook BELOW the stitch where the new colored V shows. This counts as the first stitch, seen below:
Rnd 13: *Sc 4, Inv Dec* around (30)
Rnd 14: *Sc 3, Inv Dec* around (24)
Begin stuffing your work with polyfill!
Rnd 15: *Sc 2, Inv Dec* around (18)
Rnd 16: *Sc, Inv Dec* around (12)
Rnd 17 – 20: Sc around (12)
Continue stuffing
Rnd 21: Sc across in FLO around (12)
Rnd 22 – 24: Sc around (12) Sl st into the next stitch.
Finish off and leave tail.
From here, you can now “curl” the top of the bottle so it rolls onto itself! Like so:
You can using your darning needle with the tail leftover and secure into place by pulling through! Be sure your worked is stuffed firmly before doing so:
Bottle Cap
Begin in Main Color B (Same color as main body)
Rnd 1: 5 Single crochet into Magic Ring (5)
Rnd 2: *Inc* around (10)
Rnd 3: *Sc, Inc* around (15)
Rnd 4: Sc in BLO around (15)
Rnd 5: Sc around (15) sl st into next stitch and finish off.
Assembly
Once you have your main body project stuffed and top curled, you can now attach the cap! With the cap, simply place it onto the top:
(Optional) With the tail of yarn, you can pull through both sides and then knot off so it doesn’t come off!
Felt Heart
Time to add on the small detail of felt! This part is completely optional.
Across, the heart will be 1″ long. You will need to freehand a heart when cutting but this size is a good base to go off of! I would even recommend using a marker to make sure you know where to cut.
With your felt glue, add onto the backing of the heart and then stick onto the potion in between where the color change occurs!
And then you’re DONE! Congratulations!
Thank you so much for joining me in this project! If you would like to see a video tutorial, please let me know down below in the comments.
