This post was sponsored by JOANN – My favorite craft store to visit for all my yarn and tools that I use. Also, you can’t resist all their coupons!
I just love crafting for Halloween! The projects are always some of the most fun and it’s amazing how many ideas you can come up with for what we call the spooky season. I have been crocheting for seven years and there are still so many new ideas to explore. This time, however, I am revisiting a classic concept but just with bigger yarn.
Whenever I stop by JOANN I am always welcomed by so mays seasonal greetings. They have pumpkins all over the place and although I have made pumpkins in the past, I wanted to try out one of their blanket yarns that they have for the holidays. It’s so nice to the touch and thought it would give a different spin to my usual projects. Chunky yarn is trendy and I can see why!
Pumpkins are the perfect rounded shape in my opinion – I used Yarnspirations Bernat Blanket Bright’s Yarn and a little bit of velvet and the feeling is too plush! You can use this project as a gift, home décor, and even used as a pillow. Pretty multifunctional which is always an added bonus to a project. How will you be using yours?
JOANN has helped inspire me to get ready this fall – Your Plump Pumpkin project is good beyond just Halloween, November can feel like Fall time and being able to decorate inside your home is always a treat.
You can find the full free pattern down below! Both the small and large pumpkins are both available.
What color can pumpkins be?
Have you used blanket yarn for any of your projects yet, even Amigurumi? I see more and more of it being used over on Tik Tok and after trying it out, I think I will definitely be playing around with it move forward for a good while. It feels quite good on the fingers!
JOANN makes it so easy to get what you need to make whatever your imagination wants. Luckily, all the written instructions are here and all you need is the materials from JOANN.
One could say these pumpkins are cute enough to eat – would absolutely love to see one of my readers make this in White or any other color!
Other criteria someone might meet who would enjoy this project:
- Someone looking to make Fall time home décor /project
- Someone needing a new pillow
- Someone looking to make a gift
- Someone who needs an easy project to use with blanket yarn
So where can you find what you need?

Let’s Begin
Small Pumpkin
Begin in Orange
Rnd 1: 6 Single crochet into Magic Ring (6) (Click here for video tutorial!)
Rnd 2: *Inc* around (12)
Rnd 3: *Sc, Inc* around (18)
Rnd 4: *Sc 2, Inc* around (24)
Rnd 5: *Sc 3, Inc* around (30)
Rnd 6 – 10: Sc around (30)
Insert safety eyes into round 8 with 5 stitches apart
Rnd 11: *Sc 3, Dec* around (24)
Rnd 12: *Sc 2, Dec* around (18)
Be sure to stuff your work with your polyfill!
Rnd 13: *Sc, Dec* around (12)
Rnd 14: *Dec* around (16)
Leave a generous amount of yarn for the final tail – finish off and leave long strand!
To close, insert your needle through 2 loops and pull. Find the full tutorial here!
We will now be using the long strand of yarn to create the squished pumpkin look and give it the dimensions it needs.
With your strand, insert with your needle through the bottom of the pumpkin and pulling all the way out through the other side.
With your yarn now exposed and pulled through, pull it all the way around (down the middle between the eyes to begin) and pull it through the bottom of the project once again. This will be the same direction as we did initially.
Continue this same process all the way around! You will be left with 5 “yarn pulls” (Each will be roughly 3″ between)
Pull tightly (but make sure not too tight – you can rip your yarn!)
You will have 5 exposed pull yarn strands
When pulling through the last time, knot off near the center (so we can hide it) and finish by weaving through.
Small Stem

Finish off and leave tail for sewing.

Large leaf
Ch 18
- In second stitch from hook, Dc. Dc three more times into the same witch (Dc x 3)
- There will be 4 Dc in total in this same stitch stitch. Into the next stitch, Dc x 4.
- Continue Dc x 4 into each stitch across.
- Finish off and leave tail for sewing
Assembly (This will be the same process for both the small and large pumpkins)
Attaching the stem
With the tail attached to the stem of your project, you will be inserting into the top of your pumpkin. Sew around the top where your pumpkin had a small hole or “divot”
Attaching the leaf
Using the tail of the leaf, have the back end a little behind the stem and sew into place! You can sew as far as your would like up the leaf but this will mean less movement when completed (personal preference)
And the final step is now to embroider on the face details!
YOU’RE ALL DONE!
I hope you love this project as much as I do! I can’t wait to continue to play with this blanket yarn moving forward with more of my JOANN projects. Huge thank you to them for helping me out with this fun pattern and I hope it lights up all of your homes, too.
