I love fantasy and I especially love when people can bring their imaginations to life like we’re living in a fantasy world. It’s an ability to bring a creation to the real world, and the newest Yarn Punk featured today has done just that – Today, Melissa from Crafty Kitty Crochet is here to bring you the free pattern to her Mermaid Scarf! Please give her a warm welcome and show her some love on her side of the internet, and enjoy this lovely pattern!
“Hi, I’m Melissa of Crafty Kitty Crochet! My blog is about having fun with crochet and making all kinds of unique projects – from food-themed accessories to amigurumi plushies! I began crocheting when I was seven years old, and later discovered my passion for amigurumi. This started me down a path of making pop-culture themed crochet projects, which I sold online and at comic book conventions. I was even lucky enough to be featured in the New York Times and Houston Chronicle for my crocheted critters! My love for quirky fashion / toys and crochet would eventually inspire me to create my crochet blog, which is where I now share my free patterns with others who enjoy fun crochet projects just like I do. I love designing patterns for everything from pizza hats to 80s workout outfits to mermaid accessories! And I never seem to run out of ideas for my next crazy crochet projects, so I have a feeling the best is yet to come! Check out my blog HERE to see everything else I’m up to!
Down below you will find the free pattern!
Don’t forget to pin for later!
Supplies
I / 5.25 mm hook
3 Skeins of Caron Simply Soft Party in Spring Green (approx 400 yds used for entire project) or worsted weight (weight class “4”) yarn
Scissors
Abbreviations
* = Indicates the beginning / end of a section that will be repeated
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
BLO = back loop only
St = stitch
Croc st – crocodile stitch
Ch = chain
Rep = repeat
Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together
Dimensions
About 14.5 inches in length (before fin) and 29 inches in width at top / widest point
Gauge
1 crocodile stitch across (at widest point) = about 1.5 inches, and 2 crocodile stitches (4 rows including 2dc cluster rows) = about 2” in length
Special Stitches Used
Crocodile stitch: 5 Dc around each post of a 2dc cluster; work needs to be turned in order to make 5 dc around second post.
Notes
Scarf is worked from bottom tip upwards, in alternating rows of 2dc cluster/dc rows, and croc st/sc rows. One increase occurs each row (either a 2dc cluster/dc increase, or croc st/sc increase).
At the end of each crocodile stitch row, work will already be turned from creating last croc st. At the end of each 2dc cluster row, work will not be turned until after the first half of the croc in the following row is made. Therefore, instructions do not include a “turn” at the end of each row.
In the pattern, you will see examples in bold like (Fig. 7), look below to see what that is referencing to beneath the step!
Here is a diagram of the order in which the double crochet stitches of the crocodile stitch are worked:
