I have a story to share with all of you.
I have a story to share with all of you. A little bit ago, I went to one of Portland’s thrift shops called Buffalo Exchange to browse around and hopefully get some new pants. I found what I needed and went to go try on the pants; they fit just fine and they were the color I was looking for. It was a thrift store, so the price was right! I snagged them up and considered this a successful shopping outing. The next day, I decided to give the pant’s some love and put them on. As I was about to head out the door, I tried to put my phone in my pocket and I was shocked; not even half my phone would fit into it.
I looked at the tag and it turns out, I had accidentally purchased women’s pants.. this would be an appropriate time for an Office reference. They fit fine though and I don’t have any qualms that they are women’s pants, but the pocket thing wasn’t something to be ignored. So, instead of having to buy new jeans I decided there was a way to fix this problem; by Yarn Punking them for a practical use! I have heard many of my women friends complain about this problem and now I totally get it. Here is a fun solution to this problem by adding some depth to your pockets if you can’t stand it like I couldn’t.
Down below is a free photo tutorial on how to add some length and depth to your pockets for some extra storage space! I used Lion Brand Yarn to fix these, as they are my go to for any of my yarn needs!
Materials you are going to need:
Pants
Scissors
Any color worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Yarn, Vannas Choice)
Darning Needle
4mm crochet hook (To avoid anything slipping through!)
Let’s Begin!
With your shorts or pants, flip them inside out so you can see the inside of the pocket
Cutting just a little off, cut all the width off
Now, you’re going to take your needle and tie a knot with it onto the pocket where you just cut using the blanket stitch; if you are unfamiliar with how to do this, be sure to head to the “How to Yarn Punk” blog post for the step by step tutorial!
Now you’ll be attaching your yarn onto the loops you’ve created:
From here, you will be crocheting around with a Sc into the loops and joining at the end of each round.
The length will come down to your own personal preference and needs! For me, I have an iPhone 7+ so I had to make it a little deeper.
From here, you will now decrease into each two stitches around.
and there you have it! A deeper pocket!
I hope you’ve found this to be helpful and a fun DIY to upcycle any pants that are in need of some extra love 🙂
